Are you one of those who have started using essential oils or have been using for your daily health maintanence? If you are, then I can safely assume that you are an advocate for using safe and natural base products. I’m so happy for you!
There are many bloggers or information on essential oils posted on the internet. I have tried to search online some time back on certain usage of essential oils for a particular issue that I was looking to resolve. Would you believe it, there were so many contradicting views and opinions! I decided to enroll in a class which taught basic knowledge on essential oil from an accredited school which led me further to pursue a scholar’s program in essential oil.
I would like to share with you some of the basic information on using essential oil safely. Essential oils are harvested by way of distillation or cold pressed depending on which part of the tree or fruit is being harvested. Every batch of essential oils that are produced will be tested using gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC/MS). It is a type of equipment that will analyse the chemical content of that particular essential oil. I won’t go too detail about this report as learning how to read the report is a different chapter altogether.
The GC/MS report will determine the grade of the essential oil. This includes certain composition such as linolool, geraniol and the likes for skincare formulators or aromatherapist or anyone in similar line of skill to determine the safe percentage usage on skin. Using above the maximum percentage on skin may and can cause more harm than good. Certain essential oils are phototoxicity. This means once applied, the user goes out in the sun, may experience sunburn-like on the applied skin area. It may last for hours or sometimes days depending on the amount applied and the length of time exposed to the sun.
Pure essential oil is very potent hence it must never, never be applied direct on the skin. Direct application on the skin can cause burn-like situation. The skin will turn red and raw and it can very painful. It is always recommended to dilute the essential oil with carrier oils such as coconut oil or olive oil or any type of oil that you like to apply on your skin. So if you happen to purchase “Pure Essential Oil” from any seller that recommends you can apply directly to your skin, it could mean it has already been diluted with carrier oils. However don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the label is misleading, I’m saying the content could be pure essential oil, which has been diluted for safe usage.
